STA Open Water Safety Award

Open Water is the fastest growing swimming activity within the UK and many more people are taking part in open water swimming events.  As an open water safety award holder, you will be able to work in a variety of open water environments and provide safety cover for open water swimmers. You will be responsible for ensuring the safety of your swimmers in the open water environment as well ensuring the equipment used is safe and fit for purpose.

On the STA Open Water Safety course you will learn the skills to assess an open water site, minimise the risks, perform in water rescues, provide basic first aid and resuscitation. 

This course will last for 2 years!

Where can I take this course?

This course takes place in the outdoors, typically in and around the Highlands and the Moray Coast: 

  • Aviemore, Scottish Highlands

Would you like a course delivered nearer to you? We require a minimum of 6 learners, a suitable venue with an appropriate room for theory delivery and a swimming pool with facilities for changing and showering.

Pre-course Requirements!

To take the Open Water Safety course, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Be a competent open water swimmer (eg. be able to swim continuously for 10 minutes) 

  • Be able to submerge / surface dive under the water in open water

You are assessed throughout the course by the course tutor.  Your in person practical will consist of visiting various sites and conducting risk assessments and in water practical activities.  As part of your assessment you will complete a multiple choice question paper.

You will need to provide your own travel and accommodation for your practical day.

This course can be delivered in a blended format with theory elements being delivered in my online classroom via the Zoom app.

What you'll be able to do:

On completion of your Open Water Safety course you will be equipped with the essential knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about managing safety around open water environments.   As an open water coach you will be able to deliver safer activities at open water locations.  You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to perform effective emergency response and carry out casualty care and management.
